Lady Buxton Educare & Pre-Primary Centre!
Established in 1917, Lady Buxton Educare became a cornerstone of education in Claremont, Cape Town’s southern suburbs. Consequently, we provide a nurturing, safe, and stimulating learning environment for infants to preschoolers (3 months to Grade R). Indeed, we dedicate ourselves to your child’s holistic development, cultivating independence, building self-confidence and self-esteem, and preparing young minds for the exciting journey ahead.
Furthermore, we offer healthy meals, and our passionate educators continuously develop professionally, staying informed about the latest Early Childhood Development (ECD) advancements to ensure your child’s success. In addition, we combine good teaching with individual attention in small class sizes, which ensures an effective learning program. Ultimately, our spacious classrooms and outdoor play areas offer ample space for exploration and growth.

Discover Lady Buxton’s History

The Lady Buxton Home first opened in Observatory in 1917. The guiding force was Miss Mabel Elliott, who was the Honorary Secretary of the Society for the Protection of Child Life, who had helped to establish Child Welfare Clinics throughout the Cape Peninsula. The Home was named after Lady Buxton because of her active interest in child welfare.

Since 1910, the Society operated an Emergency Home to offer temporary shelter to children whose parents couldn’t care for them due to illness, poverty, neglect, or other difficult circumstances. The original Observatory location proved unsuitable, leading the Home to move in 1920. After several temporary sites, including a cottage at Alexandra Hospital, the Home found a permanent solution in 1923 when a property in Paradise Estate was donated, and a new facility was built there.

Money was granted for the establishment of a Mothercraft Training Centre, and this opened in 1925, consisting of the Dietetic Hospital for Infants and a training centre for nurses wanting to specialise in mothercraft. These mothercraft graduates became known as Athlone nurses, because of the patronage of HRH, Princess Alice of Athlone.
The training of nurses continued until 1975.

Established in 1927, the Mothercraft League offered crucial advice on baby care and feeding, both through correspondence and at its Advisory Clinics. Due to growing needs, the adjacent Struben family property was donated in 1928, leading to the opening of the Harry and Mary Struben Memorial Home and the relocation of the Dietetic Hospital from the Emergency Home.

In 1936 the Mabel Elliott Hall and new nurses’ wing were opened.
In 1939 the Buxton Nursery School was built and here the first training of pre-school teachers started in the Cape.
Due to financial issues and withdrawn government subsidies, Athlone nurse training ended in 1975, followed by the closure of the Dietetic Hospital. The Emergency Home also ceased operations eventually.
In 1976 the Centre opened its new nursery school and a day care centre was established to meet the needs of working mothers.

In 1976 the Centre opened its new nursery school and a day care centre was established to meet the needs of working mothers.
Some of the property was sold to the Western Province Preparatory School in 1983 and an Educare Centre built.
Today the Lady Buxton Centre consists of the Educare Centre and ECD. The Educare Centre caters for children from 6 months to 6 years and consists of three units: the Baby Unit, the Day Care Unit and the Pre-Primary Unit.
